Polymer Clay Jewelry

Polyvinyl chloride

I never heard of the polymer clay medium until today. It came to my attention when I stumbled across the polymer clay jewelry website.

Until now, I always figured plastic jewelry was low end junk, but seeing this stuff has made me reconsider my position.

Polymer clay is a form of PVC that can be moulded and sculpted like clay. The illustration on this post is a representation of the polyvinyl-chloride chain.

Polymer clay is easy to mould and carve, yet the finished results are very durable and colorful. The jewelry that can be produced is limited only by the talents of the artist. Although it is mainly used in costume jewelry right now, it wouldn't surprise me if we saw some serious works of art produced at some point. I don't know what limitations there are when you scale for a larger size. There doesn't seem to be any reason why it wouldn't be possible to produce full-sized sculptures with the stuff. Something to keep on the radar anyway.

The site I visited was http://polymerclay-jewelry.com/. Pop on over and check them out if you are interested in jewelry or new materials.
